The Indiana state legislature has legalized sports betting, including mobile sports betting. Soon, anyone physically located in Indiana will be able to bet on their favorite sports, including Major League Baseball.
While MLB betting is not as popular as betting on the NFL or NBA, it still generates ample action. If you’re new to MLB betting, you’ve come to the right place. On this page, we will give you the gist on how to bet on MLB games, the lowdown on MLB odds, and when you can expect to start placing bets.
Where to Bet on the MLB in Indiana
Sports betting was just passed in early May 2019, and most expect brick and mortar casinos to start offering sports betting by the fall. This means that you’ll be able to bet on the 2020 MLB season. There are over a dozen casinos presently in Indiana, but we currently don’t know which casinos will offer sports betting.
The same goes for online sports betting, but you’ll likely have to wait a bit longer before you’re able to bet on MLB games online. Most expect Indiana sports betting to launch at some point in 2020, likely sometime during the 2020 MLB season.
Just take a look around at other states to get an idea of which sportsbooks to expect. Caesars will likely be a major player along with FanDuel, DraftKings, and 888. Don’t be surprised to see BetStars get involved as well.
Types of MLB Bets Available
We all know that the MLB season can be a bit of a grind, but it also presents ample betting opportunities. Fortunately, it’s easy to bet on MLB games, and below are the types of bets you can expect in Indiana.
Moneyline – You’re betting the winner of the game. MLB odds are simple for this one. Favorites have – odds and the odds tell you what you have to bet to win $100. Underdogs have + odds, and this tells you how much you can win on a $100 bet. For example, if you bet the Cubs at +150 over the Brewers at -150, then you have to bet $150 to win $100.
Run Line – This is a point spread bet for MLB betting. Favorites must win by more than the line and underdogs either have to win or lose by less than the line. If the Indians are -2.5 against the Devil Rays +2.5, then the Indians have to win by three runs.
Total Runs – You’re betting the total runs scored by both teams. If the line is 10.5, you must bet whether the combined score is over or under the line.
Prop Betting – These bets are on events that typically are not tied to the final score. Examples are bets how many home runs a team will hit in a game or how many innings a starting pitcher will throw.
Futures – These are bets on future events, typically on which team will win the World Series. There may be other bets, such as who will win Rookie of the Year or the Cy Young award, but these bets often are later in the season.
When Will MLB Betting Launch in Indiana
Indiana doesn’t have any MLB franchises, but there are several teams in neighboring states. As such, you can expect ample action on MLB games once Indiana sports betting finally launches. However, we don’t expect that to be until sometime in 2020.
Since legislation was just passed, casinos will focus on getting live sportsbooks launched and then focus on launching their online equivalents. You should be able to bet on MLB games at live casinos by the fall, and we anticipate mobile sports betting to launch around the Spring of 2020. Once that happens, anyone physically located in Indiana will be able to bet on their favorite MLB teams.
