The Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs will wrap up their three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Wrigley Field. Pittsburgh will be looking to salvage the series finale after dropping the first two games of the series.
Chicago sits atop the Central Division with a record of 6-2 after taking the first two games of the series 6-3 and 4-3. Pittsburgh is exactly where most people pegged them to be; last place in the Central with a record of just 2-6.
The Chicago Cubs are -210 over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the series finale.
Pirates Odds: Pittsburgh Needs Early Runs
The Pittsburgh Pirates have scored five combined runs in the ninth inning of the first two games of this series, but they have struggled to score early in games. Pittsburgh is not good enough to wait until the ninth inning to score if they want to end this dreadful series on a high note.
Starting pitching has been an issue for the Pirates this season as well, and it will be Steven Brault who takes the mound on Sunday. Brault is the scheduled opener and the Pirates are hoping he will get in a few innings before handing the ball off to Chad Kuhl.
Cubs Odds: Bullpen Still an Issue
The Cubs might be off to a 6-2 start to the season, but they have to find a way to get through the late innings. Closer Craig Kimbrel gave up two home runs on Friday night, and he might not be in that role much longer.
Chicago hit three home runs in the win on Saturday night, including a two-run blast by Kyle Schwarber. Kris Bryant was a late scratch from the lineup before game two of the series, and his absence leaves a big hole for the Cubs.
Jon Lester will make the start for the Cubs on Sunday, and he was terrific in his first start of the season as Lester did not allow a hit through five innings against the Cincinnati Reds.
Betting Pick for Pirates vs. Cubs
The Chicago Cubs are the much better team in this matchup, and that has been demonstrated in the first two games of the series. Chicago has gotten terrific work from their starters, and that trend will continue with Jon Lester.
The bullpen remains an issue for the Cubs, but their offense is good enough that it likely won’t matter. Pittsburgh just doesn’t have a good enough offense to win this game.
Bet the Chicago Cubs -210 over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the series finale.
