Indiana is in a state of flux regarding online gambling. In the past, the state was never seen as a contender to regulate online gambling. That all changed once Mike Pence joined Donald Trump in Washington. New Governor Eric Holcomb has been receptive to online gambling and has already signed a bill to regulate sports betting in the state.
What does that mean for other forms of online gambling? That means there is a very real chance that online casino gambling, including online video poker, could be in the state’s future. Read more about video poker in Indiana, where you can play video poker, and when to possibly expect online video poker to launch in the state.
Where Can I Play Online Video Poker in Indiana?
Unfortunately, online video poker is not presently available in Indiana. That could definitely change soon as Gov. Holcomb has shown receptiveness to online gambling. Now that sports betting is regulated, online casino gambling is the natural next step in online gambling evolution for the state.
For now, the only places you can play video poker is in brick and mortar casinos in the state. There are over a dozen casinos presently operating, and you should be able to find plenty of video poker action there. Once online casinos launch, expect nearly every online casino to offer at least a limited selection of video poker.
Which Video Poker Games Will Be Offered?
Once online gambling launched in Indiana, you can expect the gamut in terms of video poker offerings. You’ll naturally find all of the classic variants such as Jacks or Better, Bonus Poker, and Deuces Wild, but you’ll also find more popular alternatives such as Spin Poker, Ultimate X Bonus Streak, Wheel Poker, and more.
You’ll find a variety of stakes available, ranging from five cents a credit up to $25 per credit. For those that like to play video poker for higher stakes, you’ll have multiple options, including multi-line video poker games. Most online casinos will offer multi-line games allowing you to play anywhere from three to 100 hands of video poker at a time.
When Will Video Poker Be Available in Indiana?
Like many states, Indiana chose to address sports betting before online casino gambling, and there’s been little movement in recent months towards online casino regulation. The state has looked into the matter in the past, but no real progress was made.
That could start to change now that online sports betting has been regulated and the state has legislators receptive to change. However, we don’t anticipate that this will happen until at least 2020. Once sports betting is launched, its success will heavily influence legislators to look into other revenue streams.
Another potential influence on the online gambling market is the outcome of the legal challenge surrounding the Federal Wire Act. Late last year, the Department of Justice reversed an opinion that stated that the Wire Act only applied to sports betting. This opened the door for online casino regulation.
However, the DOJ reversed that opinion, and this has put the regulated market into a state of flux. There are presently multiple legal challenges ongoing in the courts to try and strike down the new opinion. If successful, this will make the path to regulation easier for Indiana and other states.
For now, our best estimate is that online video poker will be legal in Indiana at some point in 2020. Make sure to bookmark this site and check back as we will keep it updated with any changes regarding the status of video poker and online gambling in Indiana.
